Obituary for Phyllis Leona Maust (Byler)

Phyllis Leona Maust, 67, of Grantsville, MD, passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, WV.

Born December 9, 1954, in Dover, DE, she was the daughter of Joseph Byler and the late Amanda (Bontrager) Byler. She was also preceded in death by her husband, LaVern Maust; one sister, Alta Nisly; and father-in-law, Evan Maust.

After graduating from Lancaster Mennonite High School, Phyllis taught school for a year in Dover. She attended Rosedale Bible Institute in Irwin, OH, after which she taught for another year in Oregon. On March 10, 1979, she married her husband, LaVern, and together they raised four children.

Phyllis was committed to family which she saw as ever-expanding. She opened her home to anyone who needed a place to be; her dining room table always had room for one more seat. She loved to bake, and her cinnamon rolls and pies became symbols of her hospitality. Along with baking, Phyllis loved sewing and playing a good game of Scrabble.

She was a member of Oak Dale Church, Salisbury, and invested much time and energy into a variety of ministries. She was passionate about the Bible, and enjoyed leading women’s Bible studies and teaching Sunday school.

Phyllis’s life was marked by her trust in the goodness of God. Through times both good and bad, she kept her face turned toward the God who was both the author and finisher of her faith.

Along with her father, she is also survived by one son, Adam (Bethany) Maust; three daughters, Amanda (Wayne) Tiemersma, Joanna (Doug) Vaughn and Emily (Ryan) Stammel; two brothers, Joe (Naomi) Byler and Lyndon (Jolene) Byler; five sisters, Ida Mae Lapp, Esther (Nelson) Kurtz, MaryAnn (Kirk) Christophel, Erma (Paul) Yoder and Sharon (Harold) Kropf; six grandchildren, Bailey, Brian Regan, Liam, Maggie, Andrew and Cedric; mother-in-law, Ada Maust; and many nieces and nephews.

Friend will be received at the Oak Dale Church, 9201 Mason-Dixon Hwy., Salisbury, PA, on Friday, October 14, 2022, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the church on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Joe Byler officiating. Interment will be in the Salisbury Cemetery.
