Obituary for Matthew Beatty Stieringer

Matthew Beatty Stieringer, 88, of Frostburg, MD, died Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at his residence.

Born June 26, 1934, in Bayard, WV, he was the son of the late McCollogh and Lena (Leatherman) Stieringer. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Theresa Louise; three brothers, an infant, Clifford and McCullogh, Jr.; five sisters, Maravene, Maxine Mills, Mildred Clemmen, Wilhelmina Taylor and Vera Ellen Day.

Mr. Stieringer was a teacher, starting his career at Bayard High School in 1960, the school he graduated from and then with the Garrett Co. Board of Education in 1963, having worked in many schools within the county, he retired in July 1989, after 26 years of service. At retirement he was serving as Principal at the Grantsville Elementary School. He received a Bachelor of Education with an emphasis of history from Shepherd University and a Master of Secondary Education from West Virginia University.

He was a U.S. Navy 2nd Class Petty Officer veteran of the Korean War, while serving in the Navy, he was wither stationed in, flew over, rode through or visited 31 states and visited 16 Foregin Countries in the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas.

Matt was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Frostburg, where he became an ordained Elder in 2000. He was a lifetime member of Earl H. Opel American Legion Post 459, Salisbury, PA, Grantsville Post 214 American Legion, Grantsville, MD, where he served in many capacities, his favorite was serving with the Post 214 Color Guard for parades and funerals, proudly honoring his fellow veterans, so much so, he participated in 446 military funerals as of September 2015. He was also a lifetime member of the Garrett County Historical Society.

He enjoyed making maple syrup, maintaining his home and grounds by growing a large vegetable garden, growing rhododendrons and azaleas from seeds, growing and picking blackberry and blueberry bushes. Most of all, Matt enjoyed spending time with his family and with helping organize the Stieringer Reunion’s. He also enjoyed watching WVU Mountaineer sports and the Boston Red Sox.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Cleo Frances (Wolfe) Stieringer; one son, Matthew B. (Donna) Stieringer, Grantsville, MD; one daughter, Katrina King, Morgantown, WV; six grandchildren, Matthew Stieringer, III, Jeremy King, Justin King, Julian King, Amanda Stieringer and Tiffany Baird; seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Stanley Howes officiating. Interment will follow in the Bayard Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by Grantsville Post 214, American Legion.
