Obituary for Mary Alice Frantz (Savage)

Mary Alice Frantz, 88, one of “Garrett County’s Most Beautiful” persons, died Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at her home in Friendsville, MD, surrounded by her family.

Born July 24, 1933, in Friendsville, she was the daughter of the late Leslie Earl and Elsie Mae (Margroff) Savage. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Lisa Carol; two brothers, Eugene and Harry Savage; and three half-brothers, Roy, Robert and Ernest Savage.

Mary, “the lunch lady” retired from Northern Garrett High School Cafeteria. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church and a member of Woodmen Life, where she held many offices. For many years she participated in the Relay for Life and Hospice Walks, was a volunteer for Hospice, sitting with patients and selling raffle tickets were her specialties, she helped numerous groups with their fundraising dinners, regularly devoted to local food banks, quilted with the Addison ladies, visited nursing home residents and hospital patients to give encouragement, and transported individuals who could no longer drive. She also enjoyed babysitting her great-grandchildren before they started school. In her down time, she could be found watching the Pirates, the Steelers, and WVU sports. Mary loved traveling and visiting the Amish Community in Springs, PA.

She is survived by her son, Mark (Cynthia) and daughter, Pamela, all of Friendsville; two grandchildren, whom she adored, Amanda (Bart) Shaffer, Oakland, MD and Randall (Rebecca) Frantz, Friendsville; but her four great-grandchildren took her heart over, Maddox, Myles and Maggie Shaffer, Oakland and Emery Frantz, Friendsville. She is also survived by three sisters, Carolyn Friend, Chicago, IL; Dorothy Riebau, Eureka, MO; Linda Overton, Salisbury, PA; along with many nieces and nephews; and her dear friend, Mildred Wucik.

Friends will be received at the Grace Lutheran Church, Maple Street, Friendsville, on Saturday, February 26, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The service will follow at 12:00 p.m. in the church with the Rev. Peter Suwak officiating. Interment will be in the Blooming Rose Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Randall Frantz, Bart Shaffer, Michael Sines, Richard Sines, Steve Bosley and Luke Bosley.
