Obituary for Larry Emerson Dixon

Larry Emerson Dixon, 80, of Oakland, MD, passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2023, in Cumberland, MD, after a hard eight year battle with lung cancer and many other health problems.

Born October 15, 1942, in Garrett Co., MD, he was the son of the late Emerson Elmer and Nellie Rachel (Zimmerman) Dixon. He was also preceded in death by his wife in 1995, Sandra Kay (King) Dixon; his In-Laws, Harry and Pauline King; one sister, Gail R. Dixon; and brother, Clyde E. Dixon.

Mr. Dixon was a coal miner and a member of United Mine Workers of America. He was a graduate of Southern High School and was an incredible handyman, who could fix just about anything. He was a member of Mountain Top Hunting Club and Oakland Elks Club. Larry was a past member of the Oakland Golf Club, where he enjoyed playing golf with Charlies Angels and where he scored a total of five holes-in-one.

He is survived by one daughter, Angela K. (Dixon) Ringler and husband, Allen, Hyndman, PA; one brother, Eugene (Pam) Dixon, Swanton, MD; one sister, Shirley Glotfelty, Oakland; one brother-in-law, Rodney (Mary) King, Oakland; three grandchildren, Alyssa R. (Thomas) Johnson, Kaylin A. Ringler and Kaylee L. Ringler; five great-grandchildren, Jesten Corbin, Easton Johnson, Elias Johnson, Lucas Johnson and Maddox Johnson.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 1100 Memorial Dr., Oakland, on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow in the funeral home chapel at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor Steve Leydig officiating. Interment will be held in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to thank Larry’s caregivers for their help and kindness. They also want to thank UPMC Western Maryland’s Schwab Family Cancer Center, Dr. Yin and Dr. Bijjula.
