Obituary for Katharine Leah Miller

Katharine Leah Miller was born on April 27, 1936, in Grantsville, MD, to the late Floyd J. and Fannie Maust Miller. She died June 16, 2022, at Goodwill Retirement Community at the age of 86.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepmother and stepfather, Fannie Bender Miller Zook and Paul Zook; her siblings, Daniel, Iva Doyle, Ivan, Lewis, Jacob, Mary, and Allen; one brother-in-law, Grady Doyle, one sister-in-law, Mary Miller, and three nephews, Joel, Delbert and Robert Miller.

When Katharine was five years old, her three-year-old sister Mary died of scarlet fever. One year later, Katharine’s mother died in childbirth.

In her youth, she accepted Christ as her Savior. She was a member of Oak Dale Mennonite Church at her death.

In 1962, Katharine graduated from Baltimore City Hospitals School of Nursing and received the Second Award (one of two awards for best all-around nurse). She worked as a nurse in Baltimore, Maryland, Meyersdale Hospital, Goodwill Mennonite Home, and as a private duty nurse.

In 1963, Katharine returned home to Grantsville to receive medical care for rheumatic fever and was in bed for thirteen months. She was again treated for rheumatic fever in 1965, with a ten-month stay in bed at home.

Katharine served as Dean of Women at Rosedale Bible Institute for five years beginning in 1969. She then spent almost two years near Pittsburgh, PA, caring for a handicapped young man.

From 1976 – 1983 Katharine was dorm supervisor and Bible teacher at Cristal Lake, a school for First Nations girls in northern Ontario, Canada.

For many years, she attended Coal Run Church, a mission of the Conservative Conference near Salisbury, PA. One summer there were five boys of different ages who were known as troublemakers. Nobody wanted these boys in their class. Katharine offered to take all five of the boys and have a class with just them – as long as they gave her the trailer for her classroom, and they allowed her full reign of her class. She taught the class and didn’t have any trouble.

Although Katharine was a caring and competent nurse, she also enjoyed cake decorating, sewing, and quilting. She taught Sunday school and Bible school in various locations over the years. In her later years, Katharine enjoyed working at Four Seasons Stitchery, where she taught quilting classes.

Surviving are her siblings: Barbara, Miriam, and Ida Marie Miller, Grantsville, MD; Loretta (Dave) Burkey, Friend, NE; Rhoda (Ralph) Keefer, Oakland, MD; Alice (Bernard) Orendorf, Bittinger, MD; Gertrude (Dave) Slabach, Alton VA; and Rachel Miller, Grantsville, MD; three sisters-in-law, Grace Miller, Grantsville, MD; Eva Miller, Accident, MD; and Linda Miller, Grantsville MD. She is survived by 42 nieces and nephews, as well as many great-nieces and great-nephews. Katharine is also survived by, Connie (Regis) Mason, Anthony Lewis (Amanda), Andrew Mason (Makaila), Tyler, Zacary, and Jaxon Lewis, to whom she was Nana.

Friends will be received at the Oak Dale Mennonite Church (9201 Mason Dixon Highway, Salisbury, PA) from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 19, 2022. The funeral service will be at Oak Dale Church at 10:30 a.m. on June 20, 2022 with a viewing at 9:30. Burial will follow the service in the original Oak Dale cemetery.
