Obituary for Gary Carl Harriger

After a full life, Gary Carl Harriger, 83, of Grantsville, MD, passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2023.

Born April 6, 1940, in Bucyrus, OH, he was the son of the late Carl Warren and Esther Pauline (Schnarrenberger) Harriger.

Gary spent over 45 years in the legal profession, holding various roles including General Counsel for an insurance company, a partner in a law firm, and most recently, in private practice in Grantsville.

While some retirees spend their time on the golf course or playing cards, Gary spent his golden years volunteering in the community. Gary led the Eurasian operations of Wycliffe Associates, a missionary organization, where he traveled the world to spread God’s word. He was also a member of the Board of Directors and dedicated volunteer to the Salem Children’s Trust, a residential school supporting children in need. Gary had a servant’s heart and continued to practice law from home, helping others until the day he passed.

Gary was dedicated to his church, Calvary Chapel Cumberland, where he served on the Board of Directors and as an Elder. He lived inspired by and in accordance with the word of God, one of his favorite bible verses being Philippians 4:11: “Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am to be content.”

Gary loved to travel and spend time with his family. When he was not making Dad jokes or rooting for Ohio State or the Baltimore Ravens, he was loving on his wife of 55 years.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Ann (Waskiewicz) Harriger; one son, Jason Harriger, Baltimore, MD; two daughters, Rachel Eanes and husband, Trey, Keller, TX; Karen Currie and husband, Jim, Southlake, TX; one sister, Jacqueline Lewis, Springfield, OH; five grandchildren, Kaitlan, Addison and William Eanes, Hayden and Joel Currie.

A memorial service will be held in the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, on Monday, May 15, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Luke Miller officiating.

Expressions of sympathy may be directed to the Union Rescue Mission, 16 Queen City Pavement, Cumberland, MD 21502.
