Freeman Emerson Beitzel, 98, of Grantsville, MD, passed away on Friday, October 21, 2022, at UPMC Western Maryland, Cumberland, MD, finally meeting the Savior he adored.

Born April 8, 1924, in Bittinger, MD, he was the son of the late Daniel L. and Anna (Schrock) Beitzel. Freeman was the last remaining member of his immediate family. He was also preceded in death by nine brothers, Roy, Alvin, Elmer, Raymond, Lawrence, Melvin, Gorman, Leo and Wilbur Beitzel; two sisters, Nona Beitzel and Fannie Peachey.

Freeman was best known for his drawings that he gave away to family and friends. He only went to the seventh grade and continued working on the family farm He later started working in the dairy industry collecting milk as a driver. Farmers needed to pass state inspections to sell their milk and Freeman saw a need and started his own Dairy Spraying Sanitation Business, allowing farmers to be certified to sell their milk. He traveled to Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan, to help farmers with the inspection process. Many Amish farmers requested him because he spoke fluent Pennsylvania Dutch. The Beitzel brothers were a featured article in the 1984 Baltimore Sun Magazine for each of them starting their own business. He was a member of Oakdale Church.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Butler) Beitzel; one daughter, Sandra K. (John) Durst, Frostburg, MD; one son, Galen (Dorothy) Beitzel, Grantsville; seven grandchildren, Jonas (Tara) Durst, Stephanie Durst, Chrystal Golliday, Charity (Lance) Bullington, Nicholas (Jackie) Durst, Jared Beitzel and Jewell (Jeremy) Paxton; eight great-grandchildren, Keaden, Casen, Brock, Addison, Brook, Kanden, Malia and Bradley; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews that he loved dearly.
