Obituary for Eugene Francis Pope

Eugene Francis Pope, 88, of Salisbury, PA, died Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at Conemaugh Meyersdale Medical Center, Meyersdale, PA.

Born February 3, 1935, in Garrett Co., MD, he was the son of the late Claude and Regina (Loraditch) Pope. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Doris Elizabeth Weimer, whom he married June 18, 1960; one son, George Edward Pope; two brothers, Fr. Benedict Pope and Stephen Pope.

Mr. Pope was a supervisor with DHIA (Dairy Herd Improvement Association) and a rural mail carrier with the US Postal Service. While working with the DHIA, they allowed Eugene to bring his kid’s to work with him, which happened quite often. All the local farm families became their family.

Eugene was a graduate of Salisbury-Elk Lick High School, Class of 1953 and a U.S. Army veteran, Specialist 4 1st Calvary Division, Korea. He was a member of the St. Michael Catholic Church, West Salisbury, PA and joined the Salisbury Fire Department on March 2, 1964, where he served as secretary for over 20 years. He was also a member of the Walker-Harris Post 8826, V.F.W., Salisbury.

He is survived by one son, Patrick Eugene Pope and wife, Missy, Martinsburg, WV; two daughters, Winifred Ann “Winnie” Ringler and husband, Harry L. “Cork”, Jr., Salisbury; Christine Angela Upole and husband, Robert “Bud”, Deer Park, MD; three brothers, James L. Pope, Gaithersburg, MD; Earl Pope, Mt. Savage, MD; David Pope and companion, Sandy, Grantsville, MD; one sister-in-law, Donna Pope, Mt. Savage; two grandsons, Michael Ringler and Joshua Pope; one great-grandson, Finley Pope.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Inc., 9168 Mason-Dixon Hwy., Salisbury, on Sunday, May 7, 2023, from 2-4 & 6-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the St. Michael’s Catholic Church, on Monday, May 8, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. Military graveside rites will be accorded by Walker-Harris Post 8826, V.F.W., Salisbury.
