Obituary for Carol Ann Bowen (Knepp)

Carol Ann (Knepp) Bowen, 75, of National Pike “LongStretch”, Garrett Co., MD, went to be with her Glorious Lord and Savior, on Thursday, May 4, 2023. She passed peacefully, at home, with her husband “Bill” and her cherished dog “Bobbie”, at her side.

Born July 23, 1947, in Frostburg, MD, she was the daughter of the late Roy W. and Edna C. (Carey) Knepp. She was the granddaughter of the late Charles and Rella Knepp and the late John and Rose Carey.

Carol was a 1965 graduate of Beall High School and Washington County Hospital’s Accredited School of Radiologic Technology in 1967.

Carol began her 45-year career in Radiology and Health Care at Washington County Hospital, continuing to Memorial Hospital, later the Centre for Radiology, then to Frostburg Community Hospital and finally working at the Frostburg Medical Center. While at Frostburg Community Hospital she advanced from staff Radiographer to become Manager of the Radiology Department. Carol coordinated and managed the complete renovation of the Radiography Department that brought to the Frostburg community a modern and technologically advanced Radiology facility during the period of the 1990’s. She retired from the Western Maryland Hospital System in 2010. During her tenure at the Frostburg Hospital, she also served on the committee that established the “Accredited” Radiologic Program at the Allegany Community College.

Carol was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church on Rt. 40, served as President, Vice President, Treasurer, and other various offices within the Mt. Zion United Methodist Women for over 50 years. She served as Treasurer of the Mt. Zion Church for 26 years and served as Church Secretary for 10 years. Additionally, Carol served as an Officer in the Potomac Council of the United Methodist Women for nearly 10 years. Her professional memberships included the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, the Maryland Society of Radiologic Technologists and served as Treasurer of the Western Maryland Radiologic Technologists from 1981 to 1992. She was a Charter Member of the Grantsville Lioness Club where she served as President, Vice President and held other numerous offices.

Carol is survived by her husband of 54 years, William L. Bowen, Jr.; brother, Terry L. Knepp and wife, Laura, of Baldwin, MD; brother-in-law, J. Patrick Bowen and wife, Betsy, of Mt. Airy, MD; sister-in-law, Rebecca Newhouse, of Montpelier, VT; four nieces, Nicole Ambrose and husband, Ryan, Valerie Knepp, Tracey Bowen, Annie O’Donnell; great-nephew, Nathan Shepherd; and great-niece, Avery Ambrose.

“Mum Carol and Pap Bill” also shared with their lives the educational and societal support of their Kenyan Son Joel Masinde through the Christian Living Hope School in Bungoma, Kenya. Carol had an extended family of cousins within the Carey family of Garrett County and beyond. Carol’s deep family ties to the Carey Family Heritage created a ‘Love’ and warmth for all her family that was reflected daily in her interests to share in all of their Joys and Concerns over the years.

Carol and her family are very grateful for the Care and Concerns of ALL of the Pharmacists, Staff, Nurses, Employees of the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center @ WVU Medicine, Morgantown WV and in particular Dr. Miklous Auber, Dr. Sonikpreet Aulakh and Dr. Robert Marsh as well as Dr. Sarah Call at Mt. Laurel Medical Center, Grantsville, MD, they provided Carol four more years with us, than she might not have had without their expertise and sensitivity.

Besides Loving her family members, Carol Loved the dogs she shared with Bill over the years; CoCo, EEcko, Beau, Bart, Bentley’ Bowkie’ and currently, Bobbie.

Friends will be received at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 16864 National Pike, Frostburg, on Friday, May 12, 2023, from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the church on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Steve Davis officiating. Interment will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.
