Betty Jeanne (Wiles) Shaffer, 98, of Oakland, MD, passed away on February 28, 2023, at Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home.
Born December 1, 1924, in Terra Alta, WV, she was the daughter of the late Junior Keith and Hazel (Lemon) Wiles. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Smith Shaffer, whom she married on May 20, 1950 and one brother, Ivan Wiles.
Betty was a resident nurse at the Garrett County Health Department and retired in 1983. She grew up in Dunbar, WV, and was a member of Oak Park Church of the Brethren. She graduated July 1, 1946, from Mountain State Memorial College with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She was a member of Oakland Chapter #67, Order of the Eastern Star for 69 years and Moose Lodge, Terra Alta, for 70 years. Betty loved to play bingo.
She is survived by one daughter, Charlene S. Bennett (C.J.), Oakland; one grandchild, Brian Charles Bennett (Laura); and four great-grandchildren, Brooklynn Luckel (Hunter), Ruben Fike, Devin Fike, and Clayton Bennett.
Friends will be received at Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 1100 Memorial Drive, Oakland, MD 21550, on Saturday, March 4, 2023, from 11:00am-1:00pm. Oakland Chapter #67, Order of the Eastern Star, will hold an Eastern Star service at 12:45pm, prior to the funeral service. The funeral service will be in funeral home chapel at 1:00pm with Pastor Carl Fike officiating. Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.
