Obituary for Alice Atkins (Van Dam)
Alice Atkins, 101, of Bittinger, MD and formerly of Mt. Hope, NY, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, March 25, 2023.
She was born as Aaltje Van Dam on May 19, 1921, in Groningen, Netherlands to the late Bonne “Ben” Van Dam and Magdalena (Vos) Van Dam. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Atkins, a brother, Claus Van Dam and a sister, Hilda Scholten.
Alice is survived by her sons, Lynn Atkins (Debra), Bittinger, MD, Bernard Atkins (Jodie), Prairie du Rocher, IL, John Atkins (Janice), Silver Spring, MD; grandchildren, Donna Vander Meulen, Wallkill, NY, Bonnie Kane, Pine Bush, NY, Michelle Willmann (Kenneth), Summerfield, IL, Chris Atkins (Cindi), Belleville, IL, Gregory Atkins (Crystal), Fieldon, IL, Benjamin Atkins, Prairie du Rocher, IL, Amy Fochtman (Mike), Meyersdale, PA and Vicki Stanton (Brian), Grantsville, MD; 15 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.
Alice came to America in 1929. She married Clarence on December 31, 1942, and became a homemaker and farmer’s wife. When they moved off the farm, she was a cafeteria worker for 25 years. She was a 4-H leader for many years and was a member of Cherry Glade Mennonite Church.
Friends will be received at Cherry Glade Mennonite Church, 4051 Accident-Bittinger Road, Accident, MD on Monday, March 27, 2023, from 6-8 pm. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at 11 am at Cherry Glade Mennonite Church with Pastor Barry Maust officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at 2 pm in Mt. Hope Plains Cemetery, Otisville, NY.
